12/10 Progress Update & Beta2

Happy Friday! Today we have a lot of exciting news to share. First off, Beta2 of aTV Flash (black) is now available. Beta2 includes full support for the 4.1 AppleTV software, a handful of new features and many all-around improvements. Additionally, we have an early preview of a new feature you're sure to love.

Read on for more details on what's in Beta2 as well as a new teaser video.

ATV 4.1 jailbreak - is there one?

The iPhone Dev Team has announced a jailbreak for the new 4.1 (iOS 4.2.1) AppleTV software is nearly complete. Up to this point the only available option for jailbreaking the 4.1 software has been a 'tethered' jailbreak which can be difficult to use and is not recommended for most users. We're hoping to integrate a jailbreak into a future version of aTV Flash (black), but for now Beta2 is ready and waiting once the new jailbreak is released.

What's new in Beta2?

In addition to adding full support for the 4.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software we've been able to add some great extra features. More details below.

Installer & Maintenance

  • Added Windows compatible installer (requires Windows XP or later)
  • Improved error handling during installation (no more mysterious password prompts)
  • Improved version checking for app downloads
  • Minor bug fixes

Couch Surfer

  • Added optimized navigation when using the standard Apple remote
  • Added search and url suggestion engine
  • Added user-agent toggle setting
  • Many additional improvements

Last.fm

  • Added streaming support for Australia, Canada, Germany, and New Zealand
  • Added 'Growl' style notifications
  • Improved Last.fm scrobbling
  • Many additional improvements

How do I get Beta2?

aTV Flash (black) Beta2 is available as a free download in your account (the download links in your account will always point to the latest version). If you're already running the first beta, you can update directly on the AppleTV through the Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu.

Early preview of additional codec support

Last but certainly not least we have made some exciting progress as we work towards enabling support for additional media formats. We still have a quite a few challenges to overcome and this feature is not yet ready for beta testing. Check out the teaser below for more details.

Comments are welcome below.

Same same... I thought it's going to be a simplr process.... my ATV is not jailbroken, seasonpass is not yet ready for windowes.. etc...

greetings from Israel

How to remove?

Not happy from GR :((
For how long we are waiting?

It looks like I installed the jailbreak and transferred the ATV Flash app but I can't find the "Maintenance --> Manage Extras menu". Can anybody please tell me where it is on the Apple TV so I can install the ATV Flash apps? Cheers

i have the same issue...

Pfff, same here... Support??

I finally got it working. You have to disconnect apple TV from power and then do a tethered boot with seasonpass. But watch out, for some weird reason, i took me about 25 mins of trying to put the device in DFU mode, as soon as the light starts to flash rapidly, release every button on remote and it will boot. Then the maintenance menu will appear

Just did the same!

The Tethered booth boot went quick, now installing all the apps!SmileSmile

I assume that the thethered boot will be necessary after disconnecting the power?

Dev Team Releases Redsn0w 0.9.7 Beta 5 For iOS 4.2.1 Untethered Jailbreak

iPhone Dev Team has just released a new beta version of Redsn0w 0.9.7 - Redsn0w 0.9.7b5. Dev Team has fixed all sandbox related issues in the new beta version and it doesn’t disable Bluetooth like the previous beta versions. It is still meant only for beta testers.

iPhone Dev Team had released Redsn0w 0.9.7b1 couple of weeks back that implements the “backup plan” for iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak for iPhone 4,iPad and iPod touch 4G.

They have been working hard to fix all the issues to get it ready for the general public. They have already released Redsn0w 0.9.7b2 to fix native app crashes, Redsn0w 0.9.7b3 to fix bugs related to non-GUI programs such as Facetime, Winterboard themes, and embedded videos in iTunes and Redsn0w 0.9.7b4, which eliminated the need to install and run a separate program for usbmux.

Dev Team has updated their blog post to provide more details about the new beta version:

The fifth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). Bluetooth is now working (and any sandbox-related issues should be resolved too). Please do not pirate the 4.2b3 IPSW! Only those enrolled in the iPhone Developer program have legitimate access to that IPSW using these links (the links won’t work unless you’re a legit developer currently logged in).
Redsn0w 0.9.7 beta is currently available only for Mac users. Windows users will have to wait longer for Redsn0w 0.9.7 as the Windows version is very slow and not ready even for beta testing:

There is actually a Windows version of beta5, but it’s excruciatingly slow compared to the Mac version because it’s forced to use files on your hard drive instead of RAM while it’s processing the very large IPSW images. It really is very very painfully slow, so we probably won’t be releasing it for testing purposes unless it can be sped up somehow.
We would like to again reiterate that Redsn0w 0.9.7 beta is still not meant for general public so stay away until all the issues are resolved if you are not interested in being a beta tester.

If you plan to beta test it then download Redsn0w 0.9.7b5 for Mac using this link (Dev Team has advised beta testers to test it after a fresh restore). Please don’t forget to let us know how it goes in the comments and also provide your feedback on Dev Team’s blog, which will help them to iron out the issues before the public release.

any idea of a date for the jailbreak release? just to stop everyone looking all the time?

how can you jailbreak the ATV2 with a windows machine?

still waiting for the ATV 4.1 jailbreak to have the beta version of ATV flash black working on my atv black (4.1).
Please get the Jailbreak out otherwise the pre-order is of no use as I am not able to use the beta.

doesn't the current redsn0w work on all devices including Apple TV running 4.2.1?

Any News on a new JAILBREAK?

Always willing to learn

Soon, very soon. :)

Have an idea for Infuse? Tell us.

I can't wait for….

Just to make sure I'm clear, I got an Apple TV for Christmas and I cannot jailbreak it yet with its current os until the new version comes out?

Hi

Just before christmas I bought the crack for Apple TV 2 generation and saw that the haijack for my Apple TV was not ready.

Oh well - I thought maybe it will be ready after Christmas. Well here I am and not much has happening or has it?

Do you have an estimate when it will be ready????

Hi

I did buy the crack for Apple TV just before christmas and saw that the haijack for my Apple TV was not done... oh well ---- soon I hoped... but now... is there any news? or have I wasted my money?

Why do you not have a warning about having to jailbreak the Apple TV black before you take peoples money. Also, I do not own a Mac computer and therefore cannot use pwnage. plus I really don't want to risk messing up a brand new apple TV purchase.

Can you please let me know one of two things. One. when it will be available to download and run without me having to do anything, other then plug my apple tv into my computer, or Two that you have refunded my money.

I would like a reply within 2 business days please.

Many Thanks

The guys got some valid points. We are not all rocket scientists and just genuinely wanted to buy the product and use it as easy as possible. The below from the FAQ

"Do I need any special skills or knowledge to install aTV Flash?
No. Unlike the alternatives, aTV Flash is the only solution with a complete "point and click" interface. This provides a simple, streamlined installation that anyone can utilize. Even those with little or no technical knowledge can take advantage of the great features of aTV Flash."

The important part of "NOTE: While aTV Flash (black) is compatible with the current 4.1 (iOS 4.2.1) software, a jailbreak for this version has yet to be released. More details can be seen here: http://blog.firecore.com/3487" to be honest isnt too noticeable, and if your not too tech savvy its quite easily missed like so many posters on this forum, I admit I did the same.

So give the guy a break were not all high and mighty like yourselves. Some of us have lost out on money here through no fault of our own imo.

Cheers
John

Cheers John,

Just to let everyone know, I did recieve a reply this morning. And I really didn't mean to sound rude. I was just looking for a solution. ( maybe I shouldn't write e-mails at 2 in the morning)

Hi,
We're sorry for the trouble. In addition to aTV Flash (black) we're working on new jailbreak app that is specifically designed for the AppleTV. We're hoping to have the first beta version of this available within the next 1-2 weeks.

Cool that sounds great!

Maybe you should do some reading before you buy stuff.

Oooh, so demanding. Why don't you read before posting some useless crap? And if you want your money refunded, you are in the wrong forum buddy! How can you guarantee that you haven't copied the flash files to your own computer???

Go here for a jailbreak of Apple TV on windows:
http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=7558

Thats for Apple TV1 only I think, not the new version.

You'll be lucky, read the below questions. I can't see hardly any replies from firefox to any questions....

There seems to be so many annoyed customers on here... Shocking...

Hopefully the jailbreak will be available soon. I have owned your product for over a month and still have not been able to use it. Can you give us an update. The last update was almost a month ago.

????? Last Update a long time ago. Rumor was we'd see that untethered jailbreak for Christmas. Now it's January 4th, curious minds want to know?????????There's no point buying the "beta" if you can't use it. Can somebody from your Dev Team, comment, or send a message. It feels like waiting on the tarmac, and the captain doesn't ever send a message. Please comment!!!!!

JAILBROKEN!

OK guys, I followed carefully these instructions for jailbreaking AppleTV OS 4.2 (4.1.1) as below and IT WORKS!. After that I've been able to install the FireCore stuff. It's a bit nerdy and

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4EWKr7Ww_c0

if you want sthg clean it's perhaps a better idea to wait.

Now if you can't wait and are not too uncomfortable with command lines it definitely works

Important note for using the above method :

1/ You MUST HAVE SNOW LEOPARD installed (10.6*)

2/ The very last stage of the above video involves running a script. There you can IGNORE the following errors :

Uploading kernelcache.release.k66 to device

[==================================================] 100.0%

libusb:error [darwin_transfer_status] transfer error: device not responding (value = 0xe00002ed)

Exiting libpois0n

Does not look good but it actually works :))

I've been able to install the FireCore apps and get the extra menus for Internet browsing and co.

Good luck

Thanks virginiev.2401 I now have a bricked Apple TV.

DO NOT jailbreak you box with this method. I went through the video several times before doing the same to my Apple TV. Everything went well as per the video until I plugged the Apple TV into my TV after the process. The apple logo came up briefly then the signal to the TV disappeared!!!! I then plugged the ATV back into my imac and itunes would not recognise it. Went through the jailbreak process but when asked to connect usb cable Pwnage Tools does not see the ATV so it can put it into DFU mode. I have tried all sorts of remote combinations without any success. Also tried the process on my macbook pro, no go!!!

What a load of crap. I now have a bricked ATV and a useless subscription to this pathetic Fire Core.

You have been warned

PS if anyone knows how to get it out of this state please let me know.

Fire Core......you have alot to answer for, just read the threads below. If your trying to make a business out of this you are heading completely in the wrong direction.

Boot your AppleTV in DFU mode (Hold Menu and Play/Pause button until the light blinks rapidly) while connected to your computer and it should show up in iTunes and then restore it. Tethered jailbreaks are for developers, not users, because you can do real damage to your device with them, wait for an "official" un-tethered jailbreak.

Also, Fire Core has been up front with everything and they are calling this software an early release...if you expect it to be perfect then you didn't do your homework prior to buying.

Holding Menu and Play/Pause for six seconds, I then see the led rapidly flashing which you would assume was then in DFU mode, unfortunately not, the ATV led continues to blink steady and doesnt show up in iTunes or PwnageTools DFU mode.

"wait for an official un-tethered jailbreak" ive been waiting and waiting and waiting, when should I stop waiting???

"Fire Core has been up front" sorry don't agree. The issues that everyone is experiencing, waiting for jailbreaks should be indicated, "up-front" as you say before you press the submit to buy the product and not after you realize it wont install and then all becomes transparent when you visit the support section. They obviously are aware of these issues but are still happy to take your money. Its like selling someone a car and then saying, sorry forgot to mention, it hasn't got an engine.

Thanks
John

Seas0nPass jailbreak works great (with Apples current firmware) but it is a tethered jailbreak so if you lose power you will have to hook it back up to your computer for the reboot. Also, I don't know what to tell you about the DFU mode, holding the Menu and Play/Pause works for me every time.

If you choose to wait for another jailbreak software, I don't know what to tell you other then harass them.

Once again this is a beta/early release version and they tell you that up front. In reference to your car comment if you buy a car without looking under hood or at least cranking it up, you deserve what you get.

Um... When you buy a car it's the finished product not a test model.

You have purchased a BETA subscription that is designed to run on a jailbroken device. Firecore do not jailbreak devices - only provide a way to install software onto them. If you are pissed at the length of time it's taken to jailbreak any iOS device, hassle the hackers, not Firecore.

I suppose if you bought new tyres for you new car and didn't bother to check the size before purchasing you would complain to the tyre company if they didn't fit.

You could have done your homework and purchased an Apple TV v1, and purchased a FULL VERSION of Firecore which works, or you could have purchased a Media Centre device that better suits your needs rather than the latest Apple TV.

I fully researched Firecore BEFORE I purchased my Apple TV, opting for the older model to start with. I'll buy a newer Apple TV v2 when the Jailbreaking is stable and Firecore is out of Beta.

Finally, about being 'upfront'. The word BETA is all you need to know.

Sweet. I am going to give this a go when I get my micro usb soon.

Is this tethered still though?

Happy new year! Hope there will be a jailbreak soon!

Just purchased the tvflash (black) but if I can't Jailbreak my apple tv it doesn't do me any good! When will we be able to jailbreak it? Or how can I get my money back??

Just purchased your product and cannot jailbrake the machine.

Please let mus know when this works.

Hi,

I jailbreak my Apple TV and after it i get no connection to my WLAN.

Before jailbreake i get the connection to my WLAN.

What can i do?

Thanks

I've had the same problem while doing the IPSW transfer to ATV2G through iTunes. It's says it's not eligible. Please keep us buyers of the BETA informed. Will you send an email with the indications as soon as this issue is solved?

Thanks in advance.

Have you heard anything regarding the prompt that says not eligible when you try to restore via iTunes? I am having the same issue. thanks!

( instlall flash failed on pc )installation failed ,sorry the installer could not connect to your apple tv help !!!!! apple tvg2 black 4,1.1

And another vote for DLNA support :)

Currently have PS3MediaServer streaming HD MKV's beautifully to my PS3, would LOVE to see this supported on my ATV 2G Black

Followed all the instructions for appletv 2g and it fails to restore with the custom build fw from pwnage. Can anyone help with this?

it would be nice if you add a VPN, this could be usefull for users outside of u.s.a to watch netflix. and i heard something that netflix is checking the location only at the beginning of the stream, so a full automation like -> connect to netlix via vpn -> after the stream beginn stop vpn and use normal internetband (for better speed), so you dont need a fast vpn

+ 1. This would be awesome and I would pay for this.

A tad confused, and miffed I think!

I downloaded aTV flash black, but can't use it until a jailbreak program is available... and there is no availability date yet?

Have I been mugged?

Sad from the UK :-(

Yes you have and your not alone. Get this sorted Fire Core or give us our money back.
